This week there are a lot of textbook chapters on the docket. As I say in the syllabus, this is a skimmable week.

- The major industries and transportation changes driving the market revolution.
- How the market revolution affected gender roles and the emergence of the idea of the domestic sphere.
- The centers, both geographic and in terms of the religions/denominations involved, of the Second Great Awakening.
Jacksonian politics
- The rise of the second party system and the difference between the Whigs and the Democrats.
- The major policy goals and actions of Andrew Jackson.
Sectional Politics
- The economics of the “new” cotton-based slavery as opposed to the old tobacco-based slavery.
- An understanding of some ways in which the slavery shaped the cultures of the American south.
- The terms of the Missouri Compromise and the beginnings of the political split over slavery.
