Cliometrics

Cliometrics

The shadow of cliometrics

  • US-practiced history departments are especially computation shy.
  • Because of: Cliometrics? Time on the Cross? Something else?
  • (It’s not a digital humanities problem, it’s a US digital history problem)
  • Cliometrics didn’t fail.
  • Its failures block computational history further.

Why is this split so strong?

  • Time on the Cross was terrible.
  • The US is different because of slavery/race.
  • Something else: The NEH excludes history from social science (1964)

Can/should we reconcile?
